Spear was born July 12, 1902, in Chatham, N.J., the son of Frank and Elizabeth McLean Davidson. Spear moved with his family from New Jersey to Detroit when he was a child. He attended business school in Detroit and in the early 1930s he bought a farm near Belding where he had lived ever since. Spear had lived a long an productive life. He was the No. 1 fan of the Detroit Tigers and knew all the old and current players. He loved to listen to all the baseball games on the radio. After moving to the area, Spear had worked for Kelvinator in Grand Rapids and later at Gibson’s in Greenville and for the Belding Lumber Co. He had also driven bus for Forest Grove School. He was married Jan. 19, 1935, in Detroit to Marian P. Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marian, on March 28, 2000; brothers, Ralph, John, Archibald and Frank; and sister, Ruth. Spear is survived by daughter, Laura Alsgaard and Tom Clous of Belding; granddaughter, Heather and Jeff Kerkstra of Belding; great-grandchildren, Taylare Harris, Samantha Kerkstra, Mitchell Kerkstra; very close friends and caregivers, Janice Hartman, Doug White, Jennifer Mortensen and her son, Zach Mortensen; and several nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. In keeping with his wishes, no visitation or service will take place at this time. Memorial services will be at a later date. Interment will be with his beloved wife, Marian, in Otisco Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Alvah N. Belding Library or the Belding Museum.
