Davis bade adieu to all earthly things and took his flight into that unknown country from whose bourne no traveler returns. He was 61 years, 11 months and 20 days old, was born in Roxand township, Eaton county, near Hoytville, Mich., where for a period of sixteen years, he and his wife operated the general store at that place. For some time prior to selling out his store, Mr. Davis was bothered considerably with poor health which necessitated his retiring from business and, soon afterwards, hospitalization with surgical experiences which brought him great relief. Up until a little over a year ago he apparently had been in very good health. Mr. and Mrs. Davis purchased their home here in the village nearly 15 years ago and during this time have formed a large number of new friends and acquaintances, who, together with the host already formed at their old home in Hoytville, makes an almost countless number who will mourn the loss of so good a friend. “Laud.” as he was known by nearly everyone, was of an unusually jovial, joking and happy turn of mind, always looking upon the mirthful side, ever ready to do an act of kindness and lend a helping hand whenever the opportunity presented itself. Before going into business Mr. Davis was of a musical turn of mind and since retiring from the store he has indulged very much in musical associations, playing first chair trumpet in the Ionia City band during the last several years, also playing a great deal at odd times with the Charlotte Community band and other musical organizations. His aptness and versatile knowledge was of unusual bounds. Hardly anything in or about a home that he could not repair or make. He built many complete radio sets for different ones and has repaired and kept up the automobiles of many different personal friends. He was a natural mechanic with an ever ready studious and alert mind to learn the new inventions of modern civilization. A year ago he was taken with an incurable malady and about six months ago underwent another serious operation at Butterworth hospital at which time or soon afterwards learned that he could not recover. Since then he has been largely confined to his home, but not until one week ago was he taken to the bed. He was a great lover of children and many are the boys and girls who thought a great deal of and held him in high esteem. He was a member of the Mulliken F. & A.M. lodge, No. 412, which attended the funeral in a body as did also the Ionia City band. He leaves the wife Ollie, to whom he was married on October 8, 1889, at Charlotte; one niece Mrs. Nellie Robinson of Lansing, and two nephews Morrel Davis of Mulliken, and Leo Davis of near Hoytville. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at their home on Fifth avenue, Rev. O.F. Bulman, a friend of the deceased, preaching the sermon in his usual kind and comforting manner. Interment was in their old home cemetery at Mulliken where six of his dear friends, whom he had chosen before his going, tenderly carried him to his last resting place. Thus closes life’s chapter for our good friend and neighbor whom to know was to love.
