Ionia Standard – 2 August 1877
Saturday afternoon, the 28th ult., Mrs. Mary Davis, wife of E. W. Davis, aged 
69 years, departed this life and passed “over the river” where she awaits the 
coming of the devoted companion of her youth, her affectionate sister and the 
dutiful children that now rise up and call her blessed.  Her sufferings for 
the last ten months can hardly be imagined even by those of her own household 
who were most constant in caring for her.  All of her extreme suffering was 
endured without a murmur, and death was looked forward to, not as the “fell 
monster” but as the welcome messenger that should usher the worn spirit 
through the pearly gates into the regions of eternal bliss, where the trying 
scenes of this life are encountered no more.  On Monday at 2:30 pm her mortal 
remains were followed to the church by her husband and the entire family save 
one, and a large concourse of sympathizing friends, where the last sad rites 
to her memory were performed by her faithful pastor, Rev. M. D. Carrol and 
then to the silent tomb where earth was committed to earth.  Her life from 
early youth was devoted to the service of God, and her death was the death of 
the righteous.
