She was the widow of the late Alvin Davis who died Aug. 30, 1893. Mrs. Emily French Davis was born in Huron county, Ohio, June 18, 1823. She was married to Alvin Davis, Feb. 18, 1843. They came to Oakland Co., Michigan, in 1844, moved to Otisco, Ionia Co. in 1846, settled in Grattan 1872 where they continued to reside until their death. She was mother of eight children, Dana and Eva who died at the age of five and three years. She gave one son to her country, Virgel who was killed at Petersburg, Virginia in 1865. Her surviving children are Mrs. Flora Andrews, of Vergennes, Miss Laura Purdy, of Smyrna and Lemuel A., Robert B., and Charles F. Davis, of Grattan. She leaves one sister Mrs. Adelia Coons, of Missouri. The deceased was united with the Methodist church in early life. She was a loving wife and affectionate mother. After a long life of usefulness sustained by an abiding truth, she approached the grave like one who wraps the drapery of their couch about them and lies down to pleasant dreams.
