Ionia joins with Lake Odessa in mourning the death Monday of L. W. Davis, 
known to residents of many parts of the county “Lawd” Davis and probably one 
of the best known musicians in this section.  Mr. Davis died after an illness 
of nearly a year’s duration.

He was a retired businessman who for 20 years was proprietor of the general 
store at Hoytville, a business he sold out when his health started failing 
some 15 years ago.  After turning over his store to Robert Austin, present 
owner, he and Mrs. Davis moved to Lake Odessa to make their home, remaining 
there up to the time of his death.

From the time he took up his residence in Lake Odessa he devoted most of his 
activities to his abilities as a musician and has achieved considerable local 
fame as a cornetist and violinist.  He was first cornet player with the Ionia 
City band, an honor he shared with Frank Wirtz, Ionia business man.  

Mr. Davis was also a member of the Charlotte Community band for a considerable 
length of time, playing the cornet in that organization many entertainment 
programs also.  His violin furnished music for many entertainment programs 
throughout the county but his connection with bands was in the wind instrument 
division.

In honor to their departed friend the members of the Ionia City band attended 
the funeral in a body, an honor never before paid by the band but one of which 
Mr. Davis was eminently worthy.  

Mrs. Davis is the only immediate surviving relative. 

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the residence.
