Phillip E. Dawson, aged 82, of Saranac, died Friday, September 30, 2011 at 
Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids, following a lengthy bout with 
numerous health issues. Phil was the son of the late Glen Dawson and 
Florence Dunsmore Dawson. He was born June 15, 1929 in Saranac, in a small 
house on Summit Street directly across from his Parsonage Street residence. 
He graduated from Saranac High School in 1948.

Phil met Reta Johnson from Belding in 1949 and they were married in the 
summer of 1950.

He worked at Oldsmobile in Lansing; as a General Manager for McClellans in 
Lapeer, Michigan; and as a security guard at Mitchell Bentley in Ionia. He 
later took his place in the family restaurant business in 1977. Later he 
worked for Caswell Ford in Lowell, and then Tom Carter's in Ionia, from 
which he retired.

Phil lost his wife to cancer in 1987. Sometime later he reunited with a 
friend from childhood, Janet Cahoon from Saranac. They spent the next 20 
years together until her death in 2004.

Phil is survived by his children, Glenda Dawson and her spouse Richard 
Munschy of New Britain, Connecticut, Steve (Terry) Dawson, and Mark (Vivian) 
Dawson all of Ionia; six grandchildren, Cassondra Bennett of Riverdale, 
Michigan and Traccie Lower, Tyler Dawson, Grant Dawson, Allen Dawson, and 
Phillip Dawson all of Ionia; eight great grandchildren, Jessica Valle of 
Misawa AFB, Misawa, Japan, Nickolas Cook of Sheridan, Jakob Lower, Zakkery 
Lower, Catherine Lower, Andrew Lower, Joshua Lower, and Olivia Lower, all of 
Ionia; and two great-great grandchildren Natalie Valle of Misawa AFB, 
Misawa, Japan and Elijah Lower of Ionia; and sister-in-law, Irene Dawson of 
Saranac. 

Phil was preceded in death by older brother Jack Dawson, and granddaughter 
Sarah June Dawson.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 15th at 11 am at Zion 
Methodist Church food Pantry. Online condolences may be made at
