He married the love of his life Donna June (Durkee) Deatsman on July 31, 1954 at the First Congregational Church of Lake Odessa while on leave from the Navy. laVon graduated from Lake Odessa High School in June 1950, He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. LaVon then worked for Sears Roebuck(Lansing),Michell Bentley Corp,(Ionia) as a time keeper, and then became a self-motivated State farm Insurance Agent in lake Odessa, with the help of his wife, from 1957 until he retired in 1992 (35 years). He served as both a Board Member and Chairman of the Board of Union Bank, Lake Odessa for 22 years (1980 until 2002). LaVon was a lifetime member of the Lake Odessa VFW Post #4461 and a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce until age 36 when he retired as an exhausted roster (age limit set by organization). LaVon was a member of First Congregational Church of Lake Odessa. LaVon as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Donna; son, Gregory (Kris) Deatsman; daughter, Colleen (Patrick) Deatsman-Kelley; grandchildren,Amy (Chris) Eaton, Cody (Natalie)Deatsman, and Lauren Ritter; step-grandchildren, Laura (Mark)Hayes and Erin Ruse; great-granddaughters, Ellie Eaton, Harper Eaton and Saylor Deatsman; great grandson, Grayson Deatsman; step great granddaughters,Lainey Ruse, Lucy Ruse, Ella Ruse and Ruby Hayes; step great grandson,Vaughn Hayes; nieces and nephews. LaVon was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carlyn and Gary; sisters, Eleanor Cook Sedore, Norene Braden, and Marjorie Krepps. LaVon was an avid outdoorsman.he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, working outdoors on thee wooded property he owned with his family, and collecting Griswold cast iron cookware. LaVon's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and River Inn AFC home in Sunfield and Hospice of Lansing for the wonderful care provided to LaVon and comfort to the family. Memorials can be sent to VFW Post #4461 to be used by the Alta Frost Memorial Scholarship for graduating seniors. A military service will be held at the Lake Odessa cemetery followed by a luncheon at the VFW in may, date and time to be announced.
