Decker, aged 84, of Lake Odessa, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009. He was born in Barry County on Feb. 20, 1924 to Zeno and Evelyn (Austin) Decker. Orville graduated from Lake Odessa High School in the class of 1942. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1945-46 earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. Orville started employment at the Lake Odessa Co-Op Elevator in 1942, and following his discharge from the Army, he took over as manager in 1947, and continued in that role until retiring in 1986. On Oct. 18, 1948 Orville was married to Virginia L. Varney in Woodland. They had been members of the Central United Methodist in Lake Odessa since 1968. Orville served as a volunteer member of the Lake Odessa Fire Department, was a member of Lakewood School Board, served on the Board of Directors at Hastings Savings and Loan (Main Street Bank), and had been a member of the Jackson-Mutschler VFW Post #4461 in Lake Odessa. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Virginia L. (Varney) Decker; his sons, Dennis (Darlene) Decker of Lyons, Allen (Kathy) Decker and James (Terri) Decker of Hastings, Steven (Jackie) Decker of Rockford, and Brian (Jennie) Decker of Lake Odessa; many grandchildren and great- grandchildren; and brothers, Earl Decker of Citrus Springs, Fla., Max (Phyllis) Decker of Lake Odessa and Wayne (Shirley) Decker of Hastings. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters and brother-in-law, Leon and Georgia (Varney) Campbell, and Norma (Knickerbocker) Decker. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. The funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Central United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central United Methodist Church or the Jackson-Mutschler VFW Post #4461 Scholarship Fund.
