Child’s Death Is Area’s Eleventh Traffic Fatality.

Brings 1952 Record Equal With Entire 1951 Death Count.

The death of 13-month-old LeRoy J. DeGarmo, which occurred last Thursday
afternoon when he fell from his father’s truck and was run over, marked the
eleventh traffic fatality in Ionia County this year, and equaled the number of
traffic deaths in the county during all of 1951.

The youth was jolted from the cab of the truck being driven by his father, Jay
DeGarmo, and the rear wheels of the truck passed over him.  Coroner Dale
Kauffman stated that he had died of a skull fracture.  The accident occurred on
Keith Road, five miles northeast of Muir. 

Sheriff Ben Neve reported that the family was cherry picking at the time.  The
father and son were in the cab of the truck, and Mrs. DeGarmo was in the rear of
the truck.  Apparently the truck door jolted open allowing the youngster to fall
to the ground.  He was an only child.  

He is survived by his parents, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Monie Shafer
and Mrs. Mela DeGarmo, of Romulus.

Funeral services were conducted from the Shaw-Rivett Funeral Home Saturday
afternoon by Rev. Hollis Tiffany, of the Portland Baptist Church.  Interment was
in Muir cemetery.
