Ionia Sentinel - Monday - 29 July 1912
Zenas Delno an old resident of Ionia county, died at the county house Sunday 
night at the advanced age of 94 years.  Mr. Delno whose war history has been 
told before in The Sentinel was a member of the famous “Squirrel Hunters” of 
Ohio, who assembled several thousand strong at Cincinnati during the civil war 
when a raid by the troops of the confederate general, Kirby Smith, was thought 
to be impending.  Governor Todd of Ohio, issued a call for men to defend the 
city and the men of Ohio took whatever arms they had in the house and 
something to eat and gathered there.  They were on duty only for a short time 
and when it was seen that the rebels would not attack Cincinnati they returned 
to their homes.  One of Mr. Delno’s cherished possessions was his discharge 
from the service.  It was only a very few years ago when he received a check 
for $13, one month’s pay for the service rendered 40 years ago.

Zenas Delno was born June 21, 1818, in the town of Penbrook, Genesee County, 
New York, and departed this life July 29, 1912 at the age of 94 years.  He was 
married to Marilla Rockwell who died Sept. 14, 1894 leaving him and one son, 
Dwight Delano to mourn the loss of a kind wife and mother.  He came to 
Michigan April 7, 1864 and has since been a resident of Easton, Ionia county, 
Mich.  He leaves a son and four grandchildren who feel that he has been a true 
friend to everyone and tried to do his duty well.  The funeral will be held at 
the Easton church July 31 at 2:30 standard time and laid to rest beside his 
wife in Easton cemetery.
