Subsequent Publication: Friday, February 14, 1879 At Muir, Mich., Jan. 14, Mrs. Clarissa DeLong. She was born in North Adams, Burkshire county, Mass. Sept. 4, 1800. She was married to James DeLong, in Fairfield, Herkimer county, N.Y.—They moved to Michigan in 1842. The rest of their life was spent in Ionia county, Michigan, and most of that time in widowhood, her husband having died in 1843, leaving her to the responsibility of rearing a family of five daughters. Industrious, economical, and supremely devoted to her family, she was successful in educating and training them for usefulness and an honorable place in society. One daughter, in early womanhood, passed over the river many years age; four of them were left to comfort her old age, and to watch over her with Christian faith and hope in her dying hours. Possessed of a quick understanding and strong common sense, she joined with those a thirst for knowledge and a good literary taste that made her a great reader and an independent thinker. Confused by the unsatisfactory religious teaching to which she had listened in early years, she was led to doubt much of what was regarded as strictly orthodox doctrine; but her faith in Christ as the Divine Savior was firm and abiding—and when the simple teachings of the Disciples was first heard in that county, she listened with delight, and rejoiced to see her children rank themselves among the disciples of Christ. Of very simple and temperate habits, tho apparently frail, her life was prolonged to nearly four more years and she possessed to the last not only the devoted love of her children, but the confidence and esteem of all who knew her. Her life gently faded out and her mind was clear and bright to the last, even in her extremest weakness, and her spirit altogether calm and strong in faith and hope. Having been her neighbor for many years, and knowing her personal worth, we take pleasure in bearing witness to her intellectual vigor, moral excellence, and pure spiritual aspirations; and we offer to our stricken family our earnest sympathy in the loss of a mother so long their guide and familiar, and endeared to them by countless loving memories of goodness, faithfulness and deathless affection.
