He was educated in the public school at Lake Odessa. He was particularly interested in farming and he was employed on a farm near Portland for several seasons. He was called into the service of his country and went to Camp Custer May 28, 1917. On July 17 he left for Camp Mills, N.Y., and from there he left for France, where he was a private soldier in Co. B. 340th Inf. He died of pneumonia October 5, 1918, only a few days after writing his last letter home. LaVerne’s life was the life of many other Lake Odessa boys and was closely woven into his home and the home hearts. The local Legion Post of Lake Odessa was named in his honor. He is survived by his father, mother, one sister, Mrs. Ethel Wolcott of Sunfield, Mich., and two brothers, Clayborn of Sunfield, Mich., and Merle of Lake Odessa, besides many relatives and friends. His remains were brought to Lake Odessa with a comrade’s, Herman Eckhardt of Woodbury, which were held in care of the Legion until Sunday afternoon, when a double military funeral was held in the park.
