Chase who were comrades together in the same company and went into the service from Otisco. Captain Major Samuel L. Demorest died at Clinton, Iowa, April 2, 1908. Captain Demorest came to Otisco with his parents among the first settlers, growing up as a boy in the old log house near the old red house on the Upson farm, was married and became the owner of the next farm east. He was enrolled in Co. B. 25 Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry, in August, 1862, and was chosen their captain. Being the ranking captain in the regiment in the absence of the field officers, he commanded the regiment from August 1863 to April 1864, when he was promoted to the rank of major of his regiment and was mustered out at the close of the war in June 1865. Major Demorest was wounded in the battle of Rasacaland at Kenesaw Mountain. Soon after his return from the service Major Demorest sold his farm and went west to Missouri, and later to Clinton, Iowa, where he has made his home for the past 25 years. He leaves surviving, three sisters, Mrs. Henry Green, Mrs. Adelaide and Mrs. Satterlee, and one brother, Lyman Demorest. Major Demorest was a strong able and fearless commander, beloved by men, and trusted by his superior officers.
