Miss Demorest, the daughter of Charles L. and Alice E. Hamilton Demorest, a pioneer Otisco Township family, was born in Lansing Sept. 6, 1916. Betty graduated from Belding High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University. She taught art and French in a number of area schools. Over the years, she held numerous other positions in the education media and government sectors of our society. She was a member of the Belding Gardeneers, several historical societies and the Thimble Club. During World War II, she was commissioned as an officer in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service and served in uniform for about three years. After the war, she was appointed as a Fulbright exchange teacher and spent one year teaching in England and traveling the continent. As a result of this appointment, she had the honor of being presented to Queen Elizabeth II and to two U.S. presidents. Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church, Belding. She was always generous in her support of charitable and public welfare endeavors. Betty is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Carolyn Demorest of Annapolis, Md., Alan and Lorraine Demorest of Grand Rapids; seven nieces, nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and William P. Harris. Memorial services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at United Methodist Church, Belding, with the Revs. Ronald Fassett and Connie Shatz officiating. Interment will be in Otisco Township Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Alvah N. Belding Library, Belding Historical Society, Grattan Historical Society or Flat River Historical Society. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service.
