DENHAM. The Mexican War Veteran Buried Sunday With Military Honors. Edward P. Denham, the Mexican and civil war veteran, who died Friday, was buried Sunday afternoon, the funeral being conducted by Rev. D.A. Jewell from the M.E. church, there being a good attendance. Among those present were 40 members of Wm. H. Borden post, No. 211, G.A.R., the pall bearers being Comrades Laden, Corey, Shattuck, Scott, Sanderson, Brookins and Cook. The post conducted the service at the grave in Highland Park cemetery. The age of the deceased was 79 years and nine months. He was born near Rochester, N.Y. He served all through the Mexican war and afterwards moved with his wife and one small child to New Mexico to live. One day he had occasion to made a trip to Albuquerque and on his return found his shanty in ashes and the wife and child murdered by the Indians. With a party of neighbors he started in pursuit, overtook the red men and killed a number of them. Mr. Denham then went to Pennsylvania to live in 1862 enlisted in the First Pennsylvania rifles. A year later he was wounded in the hip, sent to the hospital for a year, then discharged; so that his war record covered in all 15 years. The injury to the hip never healed entirely, it having always been a running sore, needing constant attendance, and for 20 years he was never able to stand on his feet. For a year past he had been confined to his bed, his care falling mainly upon an adopted son, W.C. Denham, who beside his wife, survives him. Deceased united with the M.E. church while in Pennsylvania and was elected class leader and licensed as an exhorter. About 30 years ago he moved to Sheridan, Montcalm county, and there was made class leader for a number of years before he had to give up his crutches. He was thrice married. For many years he drew a pension of $72 a month. He came to Ionia about six years ago. Edward P. Denham, the old soldier, died at 1:15 o'clock Friday morning at the age of 80 years.
