Feb. 5, 1936 IONIA FARMER IS VICTIM OF HEAVY SHOW Killed by Automobile as He Walks a Along Pavement Mile South of Ionia Wednesday: Driver Not Held. Ionia county's two-day snow-blizzard claimed its first victim Wednesday morning when Ernest Densmore, 62, prominent Ionia county farmer, was struck by an automobile a few hundred feet from his home a mile south of Ionia on M-14. Densmore died an hour later at 10:30 o'clock in the Ionia hospital. Mr. Densmore was struck by a car driven by Edward Sterner, 21, of Imlay city, a cow-tester for the Michigan State dairy department who was on his way to Lansing from Ionia, Sterner told Ionia county sheriff's officers that he did not see Mr. Densmore until his car was within a few feet of him and said he was blinded by heavy snow flurries and by high drifts in the road. Mr. Sterner quickly halted an Ionia county road commission snowplow which came along and with the help of the driver put Mr. Densmore in his car. He rushed to the Ionia hospital where Mr. Densmore was attended by Dr. Roy C. Lintner. Mr. Densmore suffered a broken left leg above the knee, a broken leg below the knew, a broken right arm at the wrist, severe lacerations and possible skull fracture and was suffering from shock, Dr. Lintner said. Mr. Sterner and he believed his car was traveling about 25 miles an hour when the Accident occurred and he was slowing down to plow through the heavy snowdrift. He said he believed Mr. Densmore was walking with his head down to shield himself from the cold and blowing snow. Coroner Harry Myers said he would investigate the fatal accident and Prosecutor George E.Nichols would decide whether or not an inquest would be held. Mr. Sterner gave his statement to the county prosecutor Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Densmore' death was the third caused by automobiles in Ionia county during the past month and the second in six days. Mrs. Arnold Schmidt, of Belding, was killed last Thursday night six miles north of Ionia on M-14. There were 12 killed in 1935 and 15 in the past seven months. Richard Westbrook of Ionia township who was riding with Sterner, testified at the inquiry held by Prosecutor Nichols. Sterner was not held and Nichols said he believed there would be no inquest.
