Derthick was attended from the home on Monday afternoon, and the large attendance of the immediate neighbors was noticeable and significant, as were also the many flowers which were all about the casket. The service was begun by singing by the quartette composed of Mrs. Brock, Mrs. Thane Benedict, Mr. Thane Benedict, Mr. Lee Yates, who also sung after the reading of the scripture lesson and at the close of the discourse. The funeral discourse was by the Rev. W.H.B. Urch of Albion, long an intimate and staunch personal friend of the deceased. The tribute of the speaker to his friend gone on before, was couched in fair and earnest words, and springing from the heart, it was frank and forceful in its effect. The discourse was novel (if the term is permissible) in the spirit in which its truths, full of moral uplift, were presented. While deceased was more or less active and a favored favorite in fraternity circles, at the request of the bereaved wife and daughter, there was no attempt at the usual display, a committee of six, only, representing the Royal Arcanum, of which he was the grand secretary. This detail was composed of Brothers Montgomery Webster, F.C. Miller, Abraham DeKwack, Emory More, Frank L. Taylor, and Fred J. Whitney. The carriers, also, were from the membership of the Royal Arcanum, as follows: F.A. Stiven, Edward R. Balley, Fred Cutler Jr., Frank E. Ward, Milton M. McGeary and Wm. K. Clute. There were also present a delegation of ten of the past grand and grand officers of the Royal Arcanum, as follows: Past grand Regents J.R. Johnson of Lapeer, H.C. Hedges of North Lansing, John DeViser of Kalamazoo, D.R. Crampton of Monroe, Grand Regent S.S. Babcock of Detroit, Grand treasurer E.C. Roberts of Lapeer, State Medical Examiner J.H. Wellings of Lansing, Grand Trustee W.A. Price of Lansing, Deputy J.H. Eckstine of Jackson, and Walter S. Campbell of Detroit. Others present from out of the city were: Byron Derthick, father, from Hillsdale, Mrs. G.A. Lacey of Angola, Ind., and Mr. and Mrs. Lenardson of Pittsfield, Mich., the ladies being sisters; Messrs, A.L. and D.H. Bryan of Claire, brothers of Mrs. Derthick; Thos G. Amphlett of Chicago, cousin; John B. Amphlett of Adrian, cousin, Joseph W. Amphlett of Napoleon, and John W. Amphlett of Detroit, uncles; Mrs. Mary R. Tubbs of Chesaning, P.G. Matron of the Order Eastern Star; Mrs. Chapman of Chesaning, Miss Nellie Smith of Ada; Mr. Frank Bryant of Grand Rapids. Mr. Derthick carried $3,000 of fraternal insurance and $7,000 of old line.
