Andrew F. Detmers, 64, of Grand Rapids, died Monday, April 18 at the Allen 
Park Veterans Facility, Allen Park.  Born December 6, 1923, in Moseley, Kent 
County, he was the son of John and Ethelyn Detmers, long-time Orange Township 
residents.  He was graduated from Ionia High School with the class of 1941, 
serving as president of the FFA chapter during his senior year.

He is survived by his fiancé, Carol Marcinowski; his children, Karen 
Greenbauer, Mike Detmers, Kathy Schaffer, Kristine Detmers, Kolleen Frazine, 
Steve Detmers, and Karel Williamson, all of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren; 
one brother, Jack Detmers of Ionia; two uncles, Norman Janes of Ionia and 
Albert Detmers of Grand Rapids; several aunts and cousins.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Air Corp in Europe and 
was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.  After World War II he 
settled in Grand Rapids where he was a carpenter and he remained active in 
veterans’ affairs.  He was a past commander of the Northeast American Legion 
Post No. 459, a member of the DAV and the POW association. 

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 
with the Rev. Douglas Klukken, as celebrant.  Burial will be noon at Tuttle 
Cemetery in Ionia Thursday, under the auspices of the Kent County Honor Guard.

Relatives and friends may meet the family at the Reyers North Valley Chapel, 
2815 Fuller Ave., NE, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.  A scripture 
service will be held 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.  Memorials may be made 
to the Memorial Fund of the American Legion.
