April 26, 1951 OLD PIONEER PASSES Another of the early settlers of this area, has passed from the scene of action, Henry R. DeVries died at the home of his son William near Lake Odessa on the morning of Saturday, April 14th. Mr.DeVries was born in the Netherlands in 1952 and came to this country at the age of 14 years and settled with his parents near KeoKuk, Iowa, for a short time and then they came to this area as pioneers. He tells about the land his father first bought at Grand Rapids, which seemed so full of stumps and was so sandy they gave up tying to farm it after a short time. That land is now one of the thickly settled business districts of Grand Rapids. Surviving him are two sons, 12 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1925 after which he married Martha Hall who also died in 1944. One of his greatest ambitions was to reach the century mark, but death came after 98 years and four months.
