DEWITT, 89, DIES NEAR LANSING SUNDAY EVE. ----------------- James Nash Dewitt, who has been a resident of this village for the past 16 or 17 years, died Sunday evening from the infirmities of old age at the home, Valley Farms, of his sister-in-law and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Forbes VanLouven near Lansing, where he had been making his home for the past six or seven months. He would have been 90 years old on May 5. Mr. Dewitt was born at Bradford, Canada, and came to Grand Ledge, Mich., when he was about 20 years old. He had been a brick and stone mason and building contractor all of his life. He had been a member of the Methodist church nearly 30 years, and of the Masonic lodge at Grand Ledge about 46 years. After his wife died about a year ago he continued to live here till last fall when he went to Lansing. He is survived by a sister Mrs. Loren Snyder of Hollywood, Cal., a stepson and stepdaughter, George Dewitt and Mrs. Fred Brown in Grand Rapids, and several nieces and nephews. His only child, a daughter, died about three years ago. Funeral services were held at Central Methodist church here on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Leon W. Manning, pastor officiating, and burial was made in Lakeside cemetery. Masonic rites being conducted by the local lodge. His home lodge was represented by George Dewitt and P. M. Homer Mattice. Others from out of town who were in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. VanLouven, Mrs. Eva Denning, Mrs. Clifford VanLouven, and Mrs. and Mrs. Russell Dewitt, all of Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brown of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Clarles Roats, Foyd Mattic, and Guy Snyder of Grand Ledge, and Mrs. Dorothy Benz of Ann Arbor. Mr. Dewitt had always been very active. He had a large garden spot near his home here and worked in it considerably every summer. Last summer, though in his 90th year, he painted the outside of his house doing all of the work himself.
