He lived in his native country until 15 years of age, when, like so many other young and enterprising Germans, he turned his face toward the western continent and took passage at Liverpool, on a sailing vessel bound for New York. He was 54 days making the voyage. After spending nine days in the metropolis he came to Michigan and hired out to Wm Kitson of Easton township as a laborer on the latter's farm. He worked for Mr. Kitson eight years, receiving $5 a month the first year and the last averaging about $13 a month. He enlisted Aug. 21, 1862 in Company K. 21st Michigan infantry from which regiment he was discharged March 12, 1863, after participating in the battle of Perryville and other engagements with Buell's army of the Cumberland. Dec. 15, 1863, he reenlisted in the Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, with which regiment he served till the end of the war and was finally discharged Sept. 22, 1865. He then came to Ionia nd purchased the farm where he lived till the time of his death. He was marred Nov. 1, 1861 to Susan Robertson, sister of Duncan and David Robertson, who came to this country from Scotland when she was 16 years old. Mr. Dick was a prosperous and successful farmer and stock breeder. He was a good citizen, a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and much respected. In politics he was a republican. His funeral was on Wednesday, Nov 9th, and his remains were taken to Highland Park for interment under the escort of Wm. H. Borden, G.A.R.
