Andrew Jackson Dicken was born Oct. 29, 1831, at Ray, Macomb Co., Mich, and died after four months severe illness, Nov. 3, 1905 at Smyrna, aged 74 years, 5 days. He was the son of John and Jemima Dicken and the fourth in a family of eight children, two of whom are still living, Jane Crawford of Smyrna, and William Dicken of Ann Arbor. He learned at an early age and followed for 54 years the honorable occupation of a blacksmith. He married Jan 1, 1853, at Ray, Macomb Co., Eleanor Skellenger and this union was blessed with the following children: Charles, born Dec. 1854, died 1855; Milo, born June 24, 1858; Eva J. born June 18, 1861; Maude, born July 13, 1871, died Jan 9, 1897. The early years of his life were spent at Ray, Macomb Co., but in 1860 he moved to Fairplains. Since Apr. 1861 except for a year’s residence in Belding, and several months spent in 1876 and 1877 in Colorado for his health, he has resided at Smyrna. The “Village Blacksmith” is dead but his acts and kind deeds cannot be forgotten. By his generosity his kindness in his family and to his acquaintances, he exemplified the golden rule. By his habits, being temperate in every way and his reverence for sacred things, he showed himself the honest, consistent Christian that he avowed himself to be. His influence was for right and justice and that influence as of other well remembered men, will remain to cheer his sorrowing friends and desolate family. The funeral was held Sunday at the church, Rev. A. Secord of the Congregational church of this city officiated, who preached a very impressive sermon to a large number of old neighbors and friends. Verily a good man has laid down the burden of life.
