Mrs. Anna M. Dinsmore, Long a Portland Resident, Is Victim of Apoplexy. Was Active in Church and Fraternal Work Was Wife of John B. Dinsmore, an Early Day Merchant, and Had Lived Here Since the Age of 12. Mrs. Anna M. Dinsmore, for a great many years an active participant in the religious and fraternal life of the village, died at her apartments above the Observer office, in the new Blanchard block, at 5:00 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, of apoplexy, following an illness of a little more than a week. The woman lapsed into unconsciousness shortly after 8:00 o’clock Wednesday morning and realized nothing from that time until the end. In the opinion of Dr. Allen the stroke which caused her death was brought about by the recent excessive heat spell. Since last Saturday Mrs. Dinsmore had been almost totally blind. Little hopes of her recovery were held out from the start. Mrs. Dinsmore’s maiden name was Anna M. Sandborn. She was born in New York state October 9, 1842, and came to Portland with her parents at the age of 12 years. Portland had been her home continuously since. In December, 1860, she married John B. Dinsmore, one of the early merchants of the village, who died March 19, 1898. The couple had no children. Mrs. Dinsmore was the last member of a family of three children. A brother, Norman T. Sandborn, for many years village marshal and deputy sheriff here, died in August, 1913, and a sister, Mrs. Mehitable Ayrault, passed away last fall in New York state. For many years Mrs. Dinsmore was an active worker in the Portland Universalist church, retaining her membership until the society disbanded. Recently, however, she had affiliated with the Christian Scientists. She was also active in different fraternal auxiliary societies, having been at the time of her death treasurer of the Portland Rebekah lodge and chaplain of both the Eastern Star and Women’s Relief Corps. She was recently selected chaplain for the approaching convention of the Easter Star orders of the county, to be held at Lake Odessa September 14th, and was making plans to attend. She took a keen interest in the work and was a general favorite in fraternal circles, both at home and outside. Her successor will by no means be an easy one to select. Funeral services for Mrs. Dinsmore will be held at the Congregational church Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock. Audley F. Hewitt, first reader of the First Church of Scientists, Grand Rapids, will officiate. Burial will take place beside the grave of the husband, in Portland cemetery.
