E. Divine at his farm Saturday morning was a great surprise and shock to his many friends, very few of whom even knew of his sickness. Mr. Divine was in the city last week Monday and the following day was taken sick with scarlet fever which became so acute that his physicians, Drs. Pinkham of this city and Morgan of Greenville, who was also called, were unable to stay its progress, pneumonia having set in to aggravate the disease. Deceased was the son of Westbrook Divine, one of the respected pioneers of this township and was born here in June 1863, being 35 years old at his death. He was respected as an honest upright man and was kind, considerate and thoughtful in his family relations. He married Eva Wright and to them was born two children, a boy and girl, Vern thirteen years old and Loretta four, who have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction. On account of the contagious nature of the disease the burial took place Sunday afternoon at 5 o’clock. Mr. Divine had made ample provisions for his family by leaving a good large life insurance, $4,000 in the Preferred Bankers, $2,000 in the Maccabees, $2,000 in the A.O.U.W. and $2,000 in other companies.
