Horses Trample Farmer when Frightened. Wife and Son Injured. Funeral Monday. Last Friday while Alva Dodds, a farmer near Smyrna, was loading oats, with his wife driving the team, the standard of the wagon broke letting the wife and a young son nine years of age fall behind the horses. This frightened the team and they began to run. Mr. Dodds went to the horses’ head to grab the bridles to stop them. He missed the bridles and was thrown under their feet and trampled in the chest and abdomen. The mother and son were also injured. They were all taken to Belding hospital where Mr. Dodds died Saturday noon. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at Belding. Mr. Dodds was about 52 years old. His wife and the son are expected to recover. Survivors beside his wife, Goldie, are three sons, Gerald Dodds of Selfrige field, Mt. Clemens; Vernon Dodds of Gratton and Lyle Dodds at home; a daughter, Catherine at home and a step-daughter Evelyn Casner at home; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Higgins and Mrs. Julia Goff of Saranac, and a brother, Herbert of Saranac. Mr. Dodds was a nephew of Mrs. Jasper Morrow of Lake Odessa. -------- Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, August 8, at 2:30 o’clock for Alva J. Dodds, 52, of near Smyrna at the Fales funeral home in Belding. The Rev. Ellis of Belding officiated at the services. Interment was in Smyrna. Mr. Dodds died Saturday noon at the Belding hospital of injuries he received when he was run down by a team of horses while harvesting his oats. Survivors beside his wife, Goldie, are three sons, Gerald Dodds of Selfridge fields, Mt. Clemens; Vernon Dodds of Grattan and Lyle Dodds at home; a daughter, Catherine, at home, and a step-daughter, Evelyn Casner at home; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Higgins and Mrs. Julia Goff of Saranac, and a brother, Herbert, of Saranac. Pallbearers were Otto Oberlin, Lyle Goff, Ivan Hewett, Walter Oberlin, Earl Norton and Clare Norton.
