He was the son of James and Betsy Dodds and was the oldest of nine children. In 1853 he was united in marriage to Margareet McDonald, of Keene. To this union were born nine children, four girls and five boys. Two children have preceded the father to that brighter home above. One a little babe of 18 months, died many years ago and Mrs. Sarah Baird who died in May 1904. In the winter of 1847 when he was seventeen years of age he came to Michigan. He made the journey on foot in company with his uncle, Jesse Hollinstead, who was a few years his senior and is still living, in Ohio. Later his parents came and he lived with them on what is now John Robertson's farm in Keene till his marriage. Since that time he has lived in the vicinity of Saranac except four years in Woodland township, Barry Co. He was one of the pioneers of his county and did his share towards converting the wilderness into our farms and homes. For many years he was a member of the United Bretheren church. He was a faithful Christian and loved by all who knew him. His friends and neighbors were often heard to remark "I do not believe Hugh Dodds has an enemy." Besides his wife, who has been his faithful companion for almost fifty six years, he leaves to mourn, five sons; Auslem Dodds, of Lowell, Phillip Dodds of Odessa, Edson and Miles Dodds of Lansing; two daughters Mrs. Ella Myers of Lake Odessa and Mrs. Hattie Walker of Lowell, and four sisters, Mrs. Katherine Voorhees of Riverside, Mich., Mrs. Nancy Clark of Emmons, Minn., Mrs. Millie Duffy of Lowell, and Mrs. Hattie Knee of Keene.
