Dodds was born in the township of Boston on Dec. 2nd, 1855 and departed from this life on Tuesday evening, Aug. 17th at the farm home north of Saranac. He lived the greater part of his early life in this vicinity and was married to Mary E. Walker in 1876. To this union was born two children, Edith B. and Ralph H., who with the widow survive. Shortly after his marriage he settled in Odessa township where he was known as an industrious, upright, citizen. Five years ago he left the Odessa farm to the care of his son and moved to Saranac, the home of his daughter. Three years ago he purchased the Harvey A. Brown farm in Keene township where he resided at the time of his death. Over 40 years ago he became converted and joined the United Brethren church and later the Wesleyan Methodist. He left this world with the firm belief that all who follow His teachings will find the life everlasting. Besides the widow and children, he leaves an old mother nearly 87 years of age, four brothers, two sisters, five grand children and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his untimely demise. No better son, father or brother ever trod the pathways of mankind and the world and our country would be far better off if its people lived a citizenship on the plane of Philip M. Dodds, for truly, he lived in the house by the side of the road and was a friend to man. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in this village last Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. E. Reynolds of Odessa, assisted by Rev. Hayward, and the esteem in which Mr. Dodds was held was manifested by one of the largest funerals ever held in this village, the old friends and neighbors of Odessa being here by the score. Amid a mass of flowers he was layed to rest in the Saranac cemetery. Card of Thanks We wish to take this means of thanking the many friends and neighbors for their many expressions of sympathy in our hour of trouble and especially do we thank the singers, the pall bearers and those who so generously contributed flowers.
