She was born October 3, 1932, in Greenville to Danish immigrant parents, Einer and Gunhild Thorlund Haahr. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Einer Thorlund, and her husband of forty-one years, Harry Arthur Doehne. She is survived by her son, Thomas Doehne, daughter-in-law, Laurel Halbany, and grandchildren, Vivian, Miriam, and Harry of Novato, California; and her daughter, Helen Tallmadge, son-in-law, Frederick Tallmadge, and granddaughters, Elizabeth and Kathe of Juneau, Alaska. She is also survived by her brother, John Thorlund, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The Doehnes were known first for their farm, Doehne’s Strawberries, which employed many Portland students annually; later and perhaps better for the Michigan Wildflower Farm, which they established to conserve native Michigan wildflower species. The seeds grown on their wildflower farm beautified many miles of Michigan freeways. Upon Harry’s death, Elin moved to Sedona, Arizona, where she continued to be active in conservation and beautification, going on to become President of the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs. Under her leadership the clubs produced the children’s book Trees, Tracks, and Tails about native Arizona trees, distributed to fourth graders throughout the state, for which the clubs received the national award of excellence from the national organizations. In 2007, she moved to Novato, California, to be near her children, where she continued to garden until her last days. Those wishing to honor Elin may give to the Harry and Elin Doehne Wildflower Meadow at Meijer Gardens, 1000 E. Beltline, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49525, attn: Jamie Counterman.
