Good fortune appears to have been closely pursued by ill luck in the case of Sylvester Doremus, whose recent appointment as postmaster at Lake City was on Monday followed by the death of his wife. Although Mrs. Doremus had been in poor health for many years, her death came unexpectedly and was a keen shock to Portland friends and relatives. Mrs. Doremus was the mother of Congressman Frank F. Doremus, of Detroit, and was born in Seneca county, O., upwards of 70 years ago. Her maiden name was Sarah Peake, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Russell Peake, who settled in this vicinity in an early day. She was a member of a family of eight children, of which generation R.L. Peake, of Portland, is the only survivor. Mr. and Mrs. Doremus were married in Portland and immediately thereafter took up their residence on the Potter farm, in Danby, recently purchased by John C. Butler. About 25 years ago they moved to Lake City, where Mr. Doremus pursued his occupation as a timber estimator, which he followed in this vicinity for many years. The two surviving children are Congressman Frank E. Doremus, of Detroit, a man of national prominence, and Mrs. Addie Reeder, of Lake City. Funeral services for Mrs. Doremus were held at Lake City Wednesday, and interment was at that place. R. L. Peake, of Portland, the only surviving brother, was unable to attend, having been in poor health himself for the past several months.
