He spent the early part of his life in his native state, but at the breaking out of the Civil war was in Havre, France; he at once crossed the ocean to offer his services to his country, and immediately on landing at New York, enlisted in company (H) 51st, New York volunteers and was promoted to the office of sergeant. He served three years, at the end of his term re- enlisted, and was discharged from service in December 1864. Sept. 23, 1865 he was married to Martha Kimble of South Bend, Ind. in which state they resided until 1884 when the moved to Michigan. To them has been born five children, one daughter dying in infancy and their daughter Maude’s death occurring three years ago last August. In this death the whole community shared in their sorrow. Three children still survive; one daughter, Mrs. W. H. Langdon, and two sons, Harry and George, all being with him through his long and painful illness; Harry being a constant and devoted attendant. Mr. Doremus was one of a family of seven children, four of which survive him; one sister residing in Elkhart, Ind., one in New Jersey and two brothers in New York. He always took a great interest in the G.A.R., and was a charter member of the post at Mishawaka, Ind., where he then resided, and on coming to Grand Rapids united with the Champlin Post of which he was an active member until he moved to Hubbardston nearly eight years ago and he has been a devoted member of O. H. Read Post, serving one year as its commander. His life has been such that he will be missed and mourned not only by his immediate family, but also by a large circle of neighbors and friends. The funeral services at the home were attended by the G.A.R. in a body, Rev. N. M. Barnes of the M. E.
