Douglas, 73, of Belding, died Thursday afternoon, April 22, 2010, at Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville. Harold was born Oct. 30, 1936, in Belding, the son of Hugh and Agnes Silsby Douglas. He attended Weidman High School. Harold proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1959. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Harold was a police officer in Gladwin, worked for Holly Carburetor and later was a welder. Harold also had studied for the Baptist ministry. He was a longtime member of the Belding VFW Post 4406. In the VFW he held a variety of offices, including post commander, served on the county and state level of the VFW and ran the post bingo program for 20 years. He served as commander of the Ionia County Council VFW and District 9 offices. He was a member of AA and was very proud of his 17 years of sobriety. He was also a tough guy and proved that by riding a motorcycle to work in the wintertime. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. He is survived by his children, Harold Dwayne (Douglas) Cox, Eddie James and Kelly (Douglas) Cox, all of Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Buddy, Joe, Cody and Clay; his siblings, Barbara Hoag of Midland, Jerald and Lisa Douglas of South Dakota; his sister-in-law, Carroll Ward of Belding; aunt and uncle, Frances and Chuck Christensen of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Stephan Douglas; four stepsisters, Mable Bunce, Katherine Shindorf, Evelyn Williams, Geraldine Smith; step-brother, Gerald Ward; brother-in-law, Howard Hoag; and his longtime friend and companion, Betty Birdsall. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Bob Wagner of Holy Cross Lutheran Church Belding officiating. Interment will follow in River Ridge Cemetery with military honors provided by Belding VFW 4406 honor guards. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 today at the funeral home.
