Pleasant Was County Register of Deeds for Ten Years; Funeral Today Roy W. Douglas, resident of Ionia for many years prior to 1945, died in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Hospital at 1:20 Tuesday morning, Jan. 13, of coronary thrombosis. Mr. Douglas became ill at his home there Friday night. Roy W. Douglas was born at Smyrna, Otisco township, Dec. 6, 1896, the son of Newton C. and Jennie Douglas. He attended Belding high school and Ferris Institute, Big Rapids. After his graduation he enlisted in World War I and served until he was seriously wounded in action. His first position after his discharge from the service was as cashier of the Fenwick bank. He then came to Ionia as bookkeeper for the Chevrolet Garage, the position he held when he was elected Ionia County Register of Deeds in 1931, on the Republican ticket. He served as register in 1931 and 32 and again from 1935 through 1944. In 1945 he went to Mt. Pleasant as Veterans Counselor for Isabella county, a position he held at the time of his death. On June 4, 1919, he was united in marriage with Miss Louise Miller of Ionia. Mrs. Douglas, with their four daughters and one son, survives him. They are Mrs. Marvin Nelson, Ionia; Mrs. Orin Miller of Ann Arbor; Miss Jan and Miss Mary Lou Douglas, Mt. Pleasant, and Wayne Douglas, student at Western Michigan College of Education, Kalamazoo. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Clyde Allchin and Mrs. Floyd Jenks, of Belding, and Mrs. Harry Moon of Fremont. Mr. Douglas was a past commander of the Ionia post, American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, D. A. V., a past master of Ionia F. & A. M., No. 36, and Chapter, and of Queen Esther Chapter O. E. S. and Ionic White Shrine. Also of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club. Funeral service will be at one o’clock Thursday afternoon, Jan. 15, in Mt. Pleasant and burial in Balcom cemetery, Ionia. Rev. MacKenzie, of the Mt. Pleasant Methodist church, will officiate. Masonic graveside service will be at 3:00 o’clock.
