Miss Abigail Blackmer was born near Seneca, Ontario county, New York, in the 
year 1826.  She was married to William R. Douglas June 2nd, 1852.  They 
started immediately for Michigan and on their arrival at Detroit purchased an 
ox team and drove the remainder of the way, settling on the farm on which she 
died October 3, 1912, aged 86 years, nine months and eight days.  At an early 
age she united with the Bethel Baptist church of New York and after moving to 
Michigan untied with the Baptist church at Smyrna, of which she remained a 
faithful member until her death.

Two children were born to this union, Ada M. Hanks of Smyrna and Newton C. 
Douglas, who resides on the old homestead.  Besides the son and daughter she 
leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Mrs. Harriet Snyder of Seattle, 
Washington, and two brothers, James Blackmer of Pewamo and Newton Blackmer of 
Carson City.  Also seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  

The funeral was held at the home Saturday October 5th, at 2 p.m. and the 
remains were laid to rest in the Smyrna cemetery by the side of her husband 
who died in 1887.  There were many floral offerings from her relatives and 
many friends who will miss a kind and loving friend from their midst.

Those who attended the funeral from away were Mr. and Mrs. James Blackmer and 
daughter, Mrs. Jay Townsend of Pewamo; Newton Blackmer of Carson City; James 
Buttolph of Spencer Mills and Mrs. Jay Dillingham, of Oakfield Center.
