Ionia Daily Sentinel, 16 Mar 1918

Bessie Jane Downing was born at West Sebewa, Ionia county, Michigan, Aug. 20, 
1884, and resided here with her parents until her call from this life which 
came March 9, 1918.

Early in life she was converted and baptized in the Christian faith.  And it 
can be said that the principal events of the intervening years between this and 
the one of her death were periods devoted to administering to the wants and 
needs of others and of many deeds of sacrifice and love consistent with the 
Christian life.

Early in the year 1912 she contracted a severe cold which spread into a 
lingering cough and later developed into tuberculosis of which she was a 
patient sufferer.  A year spent in a western climate and many months’ treatment 
at a sanatorium failed to check the advance of this dread malady.

At may times during these years she was not idle, but industrious and, beyond 
her strength, ready to lighten the labor of those with whom her life was cast.

In May, 1917, she was made to know that her condition was hopeless and returned 
to her home.  It was her earnest wish, that she be spared giving a great care 
to her loved ones.  And her untiring effort and dominant spirit kept her up, 
despite the weight of the fast shortening days, and on March 9, at early dawn, 
in the presence of her devoted sister, Mrs. Will Pickens, and her father and 
mother, a sweet and patient spirit took its early flight.

She leaves to mourn her loss her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Walker 
Downing, three brothers, four sisters, many relatives, and a host of loving 
friends.
