Downs, 78, former superintendent of schools here, died at his home in Grand Rapids Friday. He was born in New York state but came to Michigan with his parents when four years of age. He received his education at Ferris Institute, Olivet College, University of Michigan and University of Chicago. Besides teaching here, he had schools in Cedar Springs, Lakeview, and Bear Lake. Leaving here in 1909 after six years he went to Grand Rapids where he taught in various schools until his retirement in 1934. He was a member of Lodge 465 F.&A.M., was high priest of Columbia Chapter, also member of Lake Odessa Congregational church. Besides the widow he is survived by two children, Russell A. of New York City and Mrs. C. I. Hoppough of Arlington, Va., whose husband is a colonel in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Honolulu at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mr. and Mrs. Downs were visiting their daughter at the time. Also a sister, Mrs. Thomas Hunter, of Vermontville. Funeral arrangements were not given.
