Aug. 22, 2013 Lawrence Martin "Larry" Dowsett, 79, of Ionia, passed away Aug. 20, 2013. He was born Jan. 16, 1934 the son of William and Edith (Fountain) Dowsett. Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Army Paratroopers during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Lucretia; children, Devin Dowsett, Melissa (Robert) Kauffman, and Lawrence "Marty" (Wendy) Dowsett; four grandchildren, Jason (Robyn) Kauffman, Samantha (Justin) Mull, Brennan (Priscilla) Dowsett, and Aubree Dowsett; six great grandchildren; sister, Kathleen Whitney; brother-in-law, Sam "Jim" (Kay) Conner; dear friend, Nancy Haight; many nieces, nephews and good friends. Preceding Larry in death were his brothers, William, Charles and John; sisters, Corabelle Moon, Juanita Richards and Sandie Maria Roberts; and great grandson Ian. Larry was employed by the Ionia County Road Commission, Ionia State Hospital and was manager of the Secretary of State Office in Ionia until retiring after 37 years of service. He was employed as security at the east gate during the Ionia Free Fair for 41 years, along with his friend Fred Haight. He filmed movies of the Ionia High School Varsity Football games for over 30 years. He worked as a volunteer for the Original Greater Ionia Hospice, Ionia Theater, and Commission on Aging. He was a member of the Belding-Ionia Masonic Lodge. A Memorial Service celebrating Larry's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at the Zion United Methodist Church in Ionia. Visitation with family will be one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Larry's name to the Ionia Public Schools Endowment Fund or the Dolly Parton Imagination Library which provides free books to children in Ionia County ages 0-5 years old.
