Drake, of 712 Branch street, died unexpectedly Saturday, February 11, at 6:30 a.m. at his home of a heart condition. Drake was taken ill about six months ago but had recovered and returned to his job as assistant superintendent of the Ionia county road commission. He was born June 20, 1893, in New Winsor, Ill., and moved to Michigan in 1902. He served 19 months overseas during World War I. Before entering the service he farmed. He worked for the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Co. in Ionia, Portland and Lowell as foreman for 12 years before entering the employ of the Ionia county road commission 19 years ago. He began as a truck driver and then was placed in charge of the gravel plant. For the past 15 years he has been assistant superintendent. He was a member of the F.A.A.M. and was a member and past commander of the American Legion post. He was also a member of the First Methodist church and served on the church board. Surviving are the wife, Daisy; a son, Richard, of Ionia; two grandchildren, Douglas and Brian, of Ionia; three brothers, James of Ionia, Roy of Hubbardston and Archie of Hesperia. Full military services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Methodist church. His body will lie in state from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in the family lot, Balcom cemetery.
