At the age of 21, at the out break of the Civil War, he enlisted in Company C, Second Michigan Cavalry. He remained in his country's service throughout the war until honorably discharged in 1865. He saw much hard service and suffered imprisonment in both Libby and Andersonville prisons, those terrible prisons of the Confederacy. Returning home from the war he was united in marriage to Olive Sears of Cascade. To them were born two sons, Fredrick C.Dunham of Chicago and George S.Dunham of near Detroit, both of whom were present at their fathers's funeral.
