Dunn, Jr. went to his heavenly home on November 24, 2014, surrounded by his family. Joseph was born in Barrington, NJ on October 2, 1935 to Joseph and Dorothy Dunn. He entered St. John the Baptist at LaSalle Religious Organization under the Brothers of Christian Services. He served on the Brothers for 17 years. Joseph moved to Ionia in 1990 and was principal at Ss. Peter and Paul School from 1990-1992. He moved to Illinois with his wife Helene, and served as principal of St. Matthew's School in Alton, IL until 1994, and returned to Michigan to serve as principal at Sacred Heart in Muskegon Heights from 1994- 1996, retiring from teaching in 1997 after 55 years in education. Joseph was an active member of the community as Kiwanis member and served for two terms as president of Kiwanis Club. He was involved in many fund-raising events with the Kiwanis Club, and served on the Zoning Board for the City of Ionia. He was an active member of his church serving in various capacities of Eucharistic Minister, choir member, Liturgical Commission, and in the Knights of Columbus. Joseph served as Grand Knight for two terms, as well as Deputy Knight. He continued his service as District Deputy for five Catholic parishes. He was a faith-filled man of God and he shared that with all he came in contact. Joseph had a strong love for Christmas, and that led to being Santa Claus along with his wife as Mrs. Claus, going to nursing homes and retirement homes in the Ionia area. His decorated "Rudolph" Christmas mobile was a familiar sight around Ionia. Joseph was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by everyone, especially his family. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Helene; stepchildren; James (Geri) Lafler of Jenison, Lawrence Lafler of Ionia, Susan Brown of Hudsonville, and Helen (Rick) Denker of Woodland; grandchildren and great grandchildren of the Lafler, Brown, and Denker families; many nieces and nephews of the Dunn family. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Bertha; brother, Robert; infant siblings, Anna and Laurence; stepmom, Mildred; stepson, Brian Lafler. Rite of Committal will take place at a later date at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Ionia. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 434 High St., Ionia. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the church. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Ss. Subsequent Publication: Thursday, December 4, 2014 In the sudden loss of my husband, Joseph L. Dunn, and the grief that follows, I did not read thoroughly the obituary I put together. It was lost in the many details of planning his funeral. I wish to correct that unbelievable omission on my part. Joseph L. Dunn is survived by his niece, Beverly Saulin and nephew, Robert Saulin of Galloway, NJ, his sister-in-law, Mrs. Beverly Dunn & Family of Tabernacle, NJ, great nephew, Robert Saulin & Family of Pennsville, NJ.
