Durkee Family Lose Another Brother

Lester Durkee of Grand Rapids, but formerly of Odessa, Passed Away Monday, 
Funeral here Wednesday

Lester Monroe Durkee, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Durkee, was born in 
Berlin township, March 30, 1863, and died January 10, 1937, at the home of his 
son Veron in Grand Rapids, with whom he lived.

On March 29, 1883, he was married to Miss Mary VanHouten of Odessa.  To this 
union were born eight children, five sons and three daughters, Laurence, Veron, 
Gaylord, Nellie Knolles and Mable Augst, the others have passed away.

Besides his children he is survived by sixteen grandchildren, and three 
brothers, Henry Lafayette of Odessa, Charles Fremont and Ellis Ward of Ionia.  
His wife died in 1910.  Several years later he married Mrs. Hattie Bowen who 
died a year ago.

He had been a helpless invalid for a number of years, always patient and 
contented.

He was a kind and loving husband and a very indulgent father.

His genial disposition won him many friends.  The body was brought to Lake 
Odessa and the funeral held at the residence of Walter Wortley on Wednesday at 
2:00 o’clock.  Burial was at Lakeside.  The pall bearers were David Leak, O.B. 
Shetterly, B.F. Rodgers, and Leander Peacock.

Those present at the funeral from away were Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Durkee, Mr. and 
Mrs. Charles Durkee and mother of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Mildred B?? of Grand 
Ledge; Mrs. Lois Leigh, Lansing; C.F. Durkee and daughter Wava, Ellis Durkee, 
and Henry Darnell, all of Ionia; Rev. and Mrs. Raymond Durkee of Williamston.  
Rev. Durkee officiated as minister.  There were also Odessa and Sebewa friends 
in attendance.
