Eldred Durkee died suddenly at home on June 29, 2014 in Saranac, Michigan.  He 
was proud of having served his country overseas, before returning home to 
Freeport, MI, to begin his family. 

Eldred married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Ann Kauffman, in 1962.  He 
was a retired self-employed general contractor who could never truly quit 
working, but rather continued to create projects to keep busy.  For years he 
was active in the Alto Lions Club and served as President for a time.  Eldred 
and Sharon enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the United States with 
their sons, as well as their daughters-in-law and granddaughters later in 
life.  When not traveling or tinkering, he loved to spend his days fishing and 
evenings playing cards. 

Eldred will be deeply missed by his wife, Sharon; son Greg (Anne) Durkee, son 
Jeff (Kristin) Durkee; three grand-daughters, Olivia, Sophia, and Marin; 
brother Fred (Harriett) Durkee; brother Gerald (Sandra) Durkee, Dwayne (Joan) 
Durkee; sister-in-law Ardith (Donald) Blough; many nieces and nephews; and many 
other friends and family whose lives he impacted locally and across the country 
in his travels. 

Eldred was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Gertrude (Price) Durkee 
of Freeport. 

The family will celebrate his life as he would have wanted, in a small casual 
memorial service on Thursday, July 3, at the park in downtown Freeport at 3:00 
p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to 
Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org or 1-877-426-2838.  Koops Funeral 
Chapel, 935 Fourth Ave., P.O. Box 565, Lake Odessa, Michigan 48889 (616-374-
8221) is assisting the family with arrangements.
