January 15, 1959 HAROLD DURKEE DIED SUNDAY Harold Durkee, 60 of Hastings, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon at Pennock hospital a short time after admittance. He was born October 18, 1898 in Montville, Ohio, son of the late Don and Alice Durkee and spent his early life on a farm north of Lake Odessa, later moving to a farm between Hastings and Middleville. Mr. Durkee was employed as a molder at the E.W. Bliss Co. at Hastings for 23 years and was the first president of the Local 414, UAW-CIO, Hastings. Because of his health he left the work at the foundry and was employed at the Hastings Mfg. Co. before purchasing a farm on King Rd. southwest of Lake Odessa, where he resided for about seven years, selling the farm and moving to Grand Ledge for a years before returning to Hastings. At the time of his death he was employed at the Vitroglass Corp. at Middleville where he had worked for about three years. Surviving are his wife Alma; one daughter Mrs George (Annetta) Sprague of Lake Odessa; two step- daughters Mrs. Wilson (Bonnie) Travis and Mrs Forest (Donna) Belson both of Hastings; one grandson Michael Sprague; five step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren; two brothers Charles Durkee of Grand Rapids and Daniel, Lake Odessa. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 at the Leonard funeral home, Hastings with burial in Lakeside cemetery, Lake Odessa. Rev. William Helrigel, of the Hastings Methodist church officiated.
