In about 1873 she came to Michigan and prepared to teach school and secured her certificate. On July 3, 1875 she was united in marriage with Lafayette H. Durkee. To this union six children were born, the eldest dying in infancy: Clarence H., living near Barryton, Lois E. (Mrs. Arthur Leigh) of Lansing, Raymond E. of Grand Rapids, Alive V. (Mrs. Ernest Beard) of Lake Odessa, and Mildred M. (Mrs. Douglas Bouck of Grand Ledge, survive. At an early age she united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a loyal member. For years she taught classes in the Sunday school. She was always zealous in the case of temperance, having served as president of the local W.C.T.U. and of the county organization. For her, "Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people" had real meaning. For the past two years she has been cared for in the homs of her children. The welfare of her family was always uppermost in her thoughts. She was generous to a fault. The entrance of her son Raymond into the christian ministry was oe of the real joys of her life. The esteem of a host of friends bears testimony to the genuineness of her life. "She hath done what she could." Always aiding others in sickness and health, having acquainted herself with much practical knowledge for the help of others. She leaves besides her children 21 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren. "Build thee more stately mansions O my soul, As the swift seasons roll-- Leave thy low vaulted past; Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast, Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea." The funeral was largely attended Sunday afternoon at the Beard home with the Rev. C. E. Thies her pastor officiating. The pall bearers were her grandsons. Mrs. Thomas Johnson furnished music. Burial was at Lakeside. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/d/durkee42879nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 3.2 Kb
