Two or three weeks ago the Observer contained an item to the effect that Robert Dutton had fallen from a step ladder while picking pears in his garden on the north side and that he never would recover from the shock. He died Monday forenoon of this week, the cause of his death having been old age and the result of the fall mentioned above. Deceased was 85 years of age the 2?th of last January and was one of the oldest if not the oldest person in Portland. He was a native of Steuben county, N.Y., but came to Michigan when it was a wilderness and came to Portland more than sixty years ago. He cleared the farm north of town now owned by John A. Webber and known as the Marcy farm. For many years, however, he had resided in the village and has not been engaged in any business. At one time he was interested in the old woolen mill now owned by T. J. Bandfield. He was twice married but had no children. He is survived by his second wife. Mr. Dutton is also survived by two brothers and a sister---Daniel, who resides in Idaho, aged 80; William, living in Wacousta, Clinton county, who is 90 years of age; Mrs. F. D. Caswell, (mother of F. E. Caswell of this village) of Cleveland, N.Y., aged 93. Funeral services in honor of deceased will be held from the Baptist church at 10 o'clock Wednesday, and Rev. Stewart will officiate. Mr. Dutton had long been a member of the Baptist church and for years one of its most liberal supporters. He was an honorable, upright man and a good citizen, but his large heart and desire to assist those in financial trouble had caused him to be imposed upon by those who took advantage of his kindness and liberality."
