The two women were dead on arrival at Ionia County Memorial hospital where they were taken by an Ionia ambulance. Dead are: Mrs. Etta Mae Walter, 62, of Peck Lake road, southwest of Ionia, who was believed to be the driver of the auto. Mrs. Etta Dutton, 83, also of Peck Lake road who was a passenger. The accident occurred in front of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rex P. O'Connor and Mrs. O'Connor heard the crash. Upon seeing the car smashed against the tree called the Ionia state police post three doors south at Ionia county airport. Officers said the car was traveling about 65 miles per hour. Trooper Ronald Colton made the investigation and was assisted by Sgt. Lincoln Dygert and Trooper Ronald Brief who were also at the post. Trooper Colton said the car, registered in the name of Carl Walter, was northbound apparently en-route to Ionia. Tire marks disclosed it had gone off the east side of M-66 pavement apparently without braking, directly into the big tree. The car was demolished. The Ionia state police officer said there were indications that the driver could have fainted and was not in control of the auto as it left the highway. Officers said Mrs. Walter operated a convalescent home and that Mrs. Dutton, who is an aunt, lived there. Mrs. Walter's husband, Clayton, died July 29, this year.
