Dye comes to the citizens of Ionia with peculiar sadness. He was a lifelong resident of this city, and his whole- hearted, genial nature made him a friend always to be cherished. He was a son of Richard Dye, who settled in the pioneer hamlet of Ionia in 1836. John W. was born here March 22, 1840, and his death occurred at the missionary station on the Congo, in charge of his son, Dr. Royal Dye, on the anniversary of his birth—March 22, 1905. The news came to the friends in Ionia in a telegram from his brother, Charles R. Dye, Battle Creek, saying that he had just received the cablegram—then length of time required in sending the news, even by use of cable, giving some idea as to the remoteness from civilization of this station, which had been Mr. Dye’s home for over a year. The cause of death was Congo fever. Decedent well understood the peril of a residence there, at his age and in his feeble condition. But he said to the friends here, that he had but few years to live at best, and he felt that he must spend those as far as possible with his children. Burial, necessarily, was immediate, and the remains will rest there forever. In a letter, not many months ago, decedent said that he might possibly return to America this season, and after visiting friends here, seek for a place in a milder climate, possible in California. He had gathered a large number of curios, which it was his intention to bring with him, and distribute among friends. John W. Dye entered the service during the war of the Rebellion, as a member of Capt. Baroth’s company, “K,” 21st Mich. Vols., which was raised in this city and county. He was promoted to quarter-master sergeant, later to quarter- master of regiment, serving until close of war. He was a faithful and competent soldier, and few members of the regiment were better liked by the comrades. His wife died after a few years of happy married life, leaving one child, Royal, between whom and his father there existed an attachment peculiarly close, even for the close relationship.
