Masons, was called upon to perform the funeral service for their late brother, Chauncey B. Dyer, a service which is rich in expression in symbolism and in thought. The grave in which the casket rests and the mourners inside the circle of the brotherhood, present a contrast to the hurrying scenes of every-day life. The brethren, no matter whether the sun send down his burning rays, or the wildest storms are raging, stand with uncovered heads while the full ritual is given. Vinton's funeral dirge, is the grand old melody of Pleyel's hymn, words and music most appropriate for such an occasion, is sung not by a trained choir but with the true feeling of those who were mourning the loss of a brother and friend. The depositing of the lambskin, the evergreen, the glove, each have a deep significance, a link from our Masonic chain. The services at the house were by W. O. Knowles of Grand Rapids. His remarks were from St. Paul, "There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. Mr. Dyer was born in Steuben county, N.Y., March 24, 1829. He came to Ionia in 1971. He left two children, a son and a daughter, the daughter, Mrs. W. H. Bentley, with whom he made his home for the past twelve years. The bearers were Brothers Bemis, Williams, Casterlin, Donovan, Marquette and Spaulding. The casket was almost covered with flowers.
