Mrs. Victor (Eulah) Eckardt 56, of route 3 Lake Odessa was killed and her sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Etta) Hough, 62 and Mrs. William (Mabel) Velte, 60, both of Woodland were seriously injured in a traffic accident Friday evening. The accident happened about 5:00 p.m. near Cascade as the women were returning home from Grand Rapids when the car driven by Mrs. Eckardt collided head-on with an oil truck as she drove around a barricade in the road. Mrs. Velte suffered compound fracture of the right arm and possible hip, rib and back fractures and Mrs. Hough, a fractured forearm, possible rib and face bone fractures, a dislocated hip, shattered pelvis and numerous cuts. Both are patients at Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids. The truck was driven by Richard Schneider of Laingsburg who was not injured according to Kent county officers who investigated. The tank truck was empty. Mrs. Eckardt, the daughter of the late George and Louise (Griebel) Schneider of Odessa township was a member of the Woodland Evangelical United Brethren Church and served as financial secretary of the church for a number of years. She was also a member of the Woodland Literary Club and past president of the District Federated Womens Club. Mrs. Eckardt had resided on M43-50 on the farm since her marriage to Mr. Eckardt, about 31 years ago. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Phyllis) Tholin of Chicago, Illinois, and Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Wolfe of Columbus Ohio; two grandchildren and the two sisters. Mrs. Eckardt reposed at the Pickens Funeral Chapel until noon Monday then taken to the Woodland Evangelical United Brethren Church where funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. with burial in Woodland Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Robert Betts and Rev. Arthur Burch officiated. Music was supplied by Mary Helen Krebs, vocalist and Mrs. Carl Noffke, organist. Bearers were Tony McCaul, Eldon Flessner, Bruce Eckardt, Carol Brodbeck, Elwood Henney, and Eugene Reuther. Honorary bearers were Lawrence Smith, Theo Lenon, Kendall Coats, Guy Kantner, Harold Stannard, Allen Grinage, Austin Schantz and George Eddy.
