Eckley, 61, of Ionia went to be with is Lord on June 28, 2000 after a courageous battle with cancer. He died at the Ingham Medical Center-Greenlawn Campus in Lansing. Eckley was born on March 3, 1939, in North Plains Township, the son of Howard and Anna (Warden) Eckley. He spent his youth in the Muir and the North Plains area. Eckley enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and served tours in Vietnam, Taiwan, Alaska, and Panama, and received many citations and awards prior to retiring in 1979, having achieved the rank of technical sergeant (E-6). He was employed by the Michigan Department of Correction in 1983 and retired as a power plant operator at Riverside Correctional Facility in 1993. Eckley and his wife, Wanda were avid campers and Eckley loved the opportunity to travel and meet new people. He loved farming and enjoyed going fishing with his buddies. He was a life member of the Sheridan V.F.W. Eckley was a very outgoing and friendly person who touched many lives and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and his beloved dog, Boots. He is survived by his wife, the former Wanda Bennett (nee Ritchey), whom he wed in 1983. He is also survived by his children, Douglas Eckley, Gregory Eckley and Jeff (Rita) Eckley of Loda, Ill.; two step-daughters, Laura Keeney (Terry Haynes) of Kalamazoo and Lorraine Fleisher of Palo; two step-sons, Joe Bennett of Midland and C.J. (Dianna) Bennett of Ionia; 14 beloved grandchildren; two precious great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Stanley (June) Eckley and Roger (Mary) Eckley of Ionia. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce DeBoer; and two grandsons, Kevin Fleisher and Luke Eckley. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lyons-Muir Church, 132 Prospect St. Muir, with Rev. Judy Downing presiding. Visitation is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Lake Funeral Home, Muir Chapel, 131 Superior St., Muir. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Muir. Memorials may be sent to Lyons-Muir Church or the American Cancer Society.
