AND MRS. GEORGE ECKMAN. Suffers a Frightful Death - Clothes Caught Fire While the Mother Was After A Pail of Water - Lived But A Short Time. Blanche Lavina, the little two and one-half year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Eckman, of Silver street, on Bayard flats, met a frightful death on Thanksgiving morning at about 9 o'clock. Mrs. Eckman left the little one on the house alone while she went across the road after a pail of water. She heard the infant scream and hastened back, only to find it standing terrified in front of the heating stove wrapped in flames. Neighbors also heard the child's terrified cry, and followed Mrs. Eckman home. One of the Shattuck boys entering the house behind her quickly threw a blanket around the unfortunate one, extinguishing the flames, but the fire had done its work well, and though Dr. Beckwith was quickly called, she died two hours later. The child's face was horribly burned on the sides and around the mouth and nose and one arm was cooked to the bone, while the body was also in a frightful condition. She had evidently stood in front of the stove, and the front damper being open the dress was drawn into the opening, a piece of it being found there. The stove was a heating stove and not a gasolene stove as reported. The mother is prostrated over the terrible death. The body was cared for by Undertaker Bradley, and arrangements have been made for the funeral, which will be held from the residence of Ervin Lanning, 623 Bayard street, at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
